The First Ever Stern Drive Wakesurfing Boat!

Wake Surfing is a fast growing sport due to its friendliness for anyone at any age to enjoy surfing behind the boat. The Sport is popular for hundreds of reasons and is known to be safer and have less impact to your knees and body compared to wakeboarding.

In the past few years inboard boat companies have released surf technologies to make the sport bigger, better, and easier to achieve. Technologies such as Malibu Boat’s Surf-Gate that allows riders to completely customize the surf wake to their specifications. The only problem was, that all this push for wake surfing was focused in the inboard market and people who prefer bow-riders and stern drives were left without being able to surf. In the past we have always suggested that people do not surf behind an inboard/outboard stern drive boat due to the proximity the rider was to the propeller while surfing. This created a danger for riders behind stern drive boats.

Bryant Boats took it upon themselves to change the stern drive market for ever and releasing the all new 2015 233x Watersports edition bow-rider. This is the first ever stern drive boat that you can safely surf behind, and will change the industry for ever. By engineering the all new sport porch for the 233x, Bryant is able to keep surfers at a safe distance from the prop as well as creating an easy way for riders to get in and out of the water. Bryant has revolutionized the stern drive industry and has created a way to safely enjoy watersports behind stern drive boats without sacrificing the benefits of an I/O engine

The Bryant Watersports package includes: Speed control, trim tabs, plug and play ballast, underwater lighting, and many more features you have to see to believe!

The Fillin Station Grille’s Work Getaway

When it comes to going out to the lake, most Memphians travel to Pickwick for a fun time with the family! Since last year a lot of changes have been going on at the lake, this includes the opening of the Fillin Station Grille at Aqua Yacht Harbor Marina.

If you haven’t made it out to get breakfast, lunch, or dinner at the Fillin Station, then you are missing out on some great food. As soon as you walk in to the place, you are greeted with smiles. You have the option of sitting outside in the newly built deck or inside to escape the heat. The service and management are top class, and the food is exceptional. During Memorial Day, the crew at the Fillin Station was all hands on deck and worked tirelessly to serve every customer and keep tables happy during their meals. As you know, Pickwick gets busy on big weekends, but that doesn’t stop the people at the Fillin Station from working their hardest to make the customers happy.

The Memphis Boat Center crew has become regular customers at the Fillin Station, and we love going to eat there after a long day out on the water. The food really is amazing, and if they don’t have it on the menu they can make it for you as long as they have the ingredients! We tend to order a lot of Chicken Philly Sandwiches even though they are not on the menu, and they are some of the best we have eaten.  During our dinner a few weeks ago, we began to talk to the restaurants amazing management team and came up with an idea to take their employees out on the lake on their day off for a full day of surfing as a treat for all their hard work during Memorial Day.

The day came and we drove up to Pickwick and met the Fillin Station Crew at the restaurant on the water and loaded everyone up on the beautiful 21VLX. We stopped at the Aqua fuel dock to get ice for the water and gatorades in the cooler and headed down to the Tom Bigbee waterway. None of the crew had surfed before, but by the end of the day everyone had surfed or wakeboarded! The smiles of everyone when they got up and surfed was amazing, and they were soon taking pictures and posting them to all their social media networks!

The day was perfect in every way, the weather was great, we were the only ones on the river, and everyone learned how to surf. Memphis Boat Center enjoys partnering up with companies and taking out their hard working employees for a day out on the water. This creates team bonding through spending time together and helping each other learn how to surf. There will always be a time for people to have fun on the water, enjoying the gorgeous lakes in our area and working together as a team learning a new sport!

The Checklist!

It happens to all of us… We are finally on the water and enjoying the lake, when suddenly we realize that we have forgotten to bring the snacks for the kids, waters for the coolers, or a first aid kit for any cuts or scrapes. “how could i have forgotten it!, i put it on the counter so that i would see it on my way out!”, says everyone in frustration when the one thing they need at that exact moment has been left behind!

Here at Memphis Boat Center we tend to be on the water a lot and we constantly leave things behind such as paddles, dock lines, towels, or first aid kits.  Some even ask us why we go out of our way to have some of the items in the list of intangibles that we are about to share with you, but the answer is plain and simple. 9 out of 10 times you will never have to use some of these items but on the 10th time if your stuck without it, the day can turn into a bad experience on the lake.

So we have gotten together and come up with a list of items you should always pack before leaving the house and double check that they are with you before putting the boat in the water.

  • Phone: Make sure that it has a full battery. Have one phone on the boat to be used only for emergencies.
  • Paddle: Trust us, if you run out of gas, or your boat doesn’t crank in the water, paddling back with wakeboards and ski’s is not a fun experience. Yes, we have done it.
  • Sunscreen: Its always a good idea to have extra sunscreen on the boat and to put it on multiple times a day. If not, all the alo vera in this world would not be enough for the pain that is sun burns.
  • Towels: When you come out of the water for the last time its always nice to have a dry towel to dry off so that you do not get cold from “air drying”.
  • Change of Clothes: At the end of the day it is always better when you get back in your car wearing dry clothes, avoiding a long ride home in a wet bathing suit or shorts. Along with the dry towel, a change of clothes are the best combination once you have come out of the water.
  • Sunglasses/Hats: Protecting your eyes is one of the most important things that you can do out on the lake. With sunglasses and hats, you do no not only protect your eyes but also avoid migraines or head aches that are caused from a full day out on the sun without eye protection.
  • Dock Lines/Bumpers: If you ever want to tie up to other boats or to a restaurant or marina, if you do not have dock lines you will find yourself sitting next to your boat holding it at all times. If you do not have bumpers, the possibility of your boat getting scratches increases significantly.
  • Water/Snacks: Water could be the most important item on this list. It is a good idea to have plenty of it and have it iced down. If the forecast is warmer than usual, bring more waters to avoid heat exhaustion or dehydration. Snacks are also important since because they will give you the energy and protein that you loose throughout the day.
  • First Aid Kit: Every once in a while an accident will happen that will require someone to clean up a scratch or cut. Lake water can be dirty and contain bacteria so by having a kit on the boat the chances of getting a cut infected decrease since you can clean the wound as soon as you come out of the water.
  • Tools: If you go to Lowes or any store like it you will see a 6 in 1 combination screw driver. This tool is awesome on the boat and will help you with any small fix that you need to do on the water.
  • Cash: Always make sure you have extra cash on you when you go to the lake. In case of an emergency cash is accepted anywhere, and some boat ramps do not take credit cards.

No matter where you are going, if you take everything on the list on the boat with you, you will be sure to have a great stress free and problem free day out on the water.

Catching up with Raimi Merritt before Memorial Day.

Here at Memphis Boat Center we have had very little time to stop and catch our breath with Memorial Day around the corner. We are so happy to see that everyone is excited about the holiday and coming in to the store and stocking up with the best products from our pro shop. Being an exclusive Hyperlite/Byerly dealer we are proud to carry the best boards in the industry designed by the best athletes in the world.

Raimi Hyperlite shoot
One of these such athletes, Raimi Merritt, is hard at work getting ready for a summer full of competitions and events. Raimi has established herself as one of the best women wakeboarders in the world, but no matter her celebrity status and fame, she remains grounded and is one of the nicest people you could ever have a conversation with. She keeps her friends close and family closer. Enjoy our exclusive interview with Raimi as we find out a little about her and her plans for Memorial Day.

Q: What is your favorite part about spending a warm summer holiday out on the lake with friends and family? Do you have any plans for Memorial Day this year?

A: My favorite part is being able to make memories with the people you love and enjoy spending time with. I grew up on the lake and spending time with my family skiing and wake boarding, so I love being able to continue to do that throughout my life. I will be competing in the Nautique Masters this Memorial Day weekend!

Q: When did you start wakeboarding? Who was your biggest influence while learning how to ride?

A: I started wake boarding at the age of 9. My dad was definitely my biggest influence because he introduced me into wake boarding and was my drive and encouragement throughout my learning process. He also was a professional barefoot waterskier, so I wanted to follow his footsteps.

Q: With the Maiden being one of the best all around boards that we have seen, what would you tell a girl who is thinking about a new board but is not quite sure what to get? In your words why is your board a cut above the rest, but yet friendly for anyone to use?

A: All of the womens boards on the hyperlite line are made specially for women riders, which is one of the main reasons the maiden is such a great board to ride. My favorite part of the maiden board is the continuous rocker, which allows me to have a consistent edge up and through the wake and it also gives me the ability to have a big pop! The Brighton system boots that are a part of the maiden series and the only womens system boots out are also awesome because they have great ankle support and include the BOA system that helps fit to any ankle. On top of all the great technical stuff the maiden series LOOKS AWESOME & FUN!

Q: Everyone we talk to has their favorite location to take their friends and family out on the lake, where would you say your favorite place to ride is?

A: I would have to say my backyard here in Orlando, fl on Lake Conway!

Q:What do you see in your future in wakeboarding? How do you want to be remembered?

A: I see my riding to continue progressing and competing. I want to be remembered all around from my personality to my riding. The more I ride the more I learn and make my own style and that is a huge reason why I love wake boarding because I can do stuff in my own way.

Learn a Trick with Raimi.

Imagine being on the boat with Raimi Merritt. You have your boots strapped on and ready to hit the water. As a beginner, you are a little nervous, but you are excited to to get out there. You look up, and there you see Raimi, who tells you the secret of how to get better and more comfortable on your new Maiden. and the best trick to learn first on the water.

Raimi Merritt: First of all always have fun! Dont beat yourself up if you dont get something the first try because once you do get it, everything else becomes super easy. One of the best tricks to learn first is wake to wake jumps. The first invert I learned was a heel side backroll.

Some things to consider when buying a pre-owned boat.

Are you thinking about buying a pre-owned boat? Are you worried your going to be lied to and sold a boat that doesn’t work? How do you know if the boat will run properly? How do you know your investment will not go to waste?

These are all questions many people ask themselves when buying a pre-owned boat. Sometimes, the cheapest deal is not the best deal. Here at Memphis Boat Center we go through a rigorous inspection process to be sure we are offering quality at a good value.  That being said, Today is your lucky day!

jeremy

In this weeks blog, we will share with you the things to look for in a used boat to make sure that your investment is worth every penny!

Jerms

We break our inspections into Six different categories; Exterior/Interior, Powertrain, Instrumentation, Compression Test, Trailer, and finally the Lake Test. Lets define each category for you and tell you what to look for. Lets break it down!

EXTERIOR/INTERIOR

  • Hull Gelcoat- check for cracks, scratches, flaws or any damage
  • Deck Gelcoat- check for cracks, scratches, and damage
  • Decals- are the decals in good shape?
  • Hardware exterior- is the boat missing any bolts, screws, rivets, etc.
  • Windshield- are there any cracks, missing parts, etc.
  • Platform- is the platform in good shape, will you have to replace it, or re-cover it.
  • Underwater gear- is the underwater gear in good shape? Is the prop shaft straight?  Prop true? Any sign of impact?
  • Carpet- Is the carpet clean, missing snaps, mildewed, or nasty?
  • Upholstery- any cuts or holes, cracks, rotten wood, failed stitching, etc
  • Bimini- any cuts or holes, broken pieces, missing parts, cover, etc

POWERTRAIN

  • Engine Model- is the boat properly powered for its size?
  • Belts/Hoses- are they tight? dry-rotted? in good shape?
  • Oil Level- is the oil level good? is it clean? Any leaks? Oil condition can be a good indication of how a boat has been maintained.
  • Alternator- check the volt gauge, is the system charging properly?
  • Starter – does the starter work properly every time?
  • Run at idle. make sure idle is a good constant RPM.  Do you hear any abnormal sounds in the engine?  All cylinders firing?

INSTRUMENTATION

  • Steering- does the steering work properly and with the proper resistance?
  • Throttle-does the throttle advance smoothly?
  • Fire Ext- required equipment.  Is it present and charged?
  • Fuel Gauge- does the fuel gauge work, mark the proper amount of fuel?
  • Temp Gauge- does the temp gauge work?
  • Volt Gauge- does the volt gauge display the proper voltage?
  • Blower- does the blower work?
  • Bilge Pump- does the bilge work? can you hear it running?
  • Nav Lights- do both the navigation and anchor lights work properly?
  • Stereo/Speakers- does the unit power up?  does the remote(s) work? do the speakers work? tower speakers? are the speakers blown?

COMPRESSION TEST

  • A good indicator of the health of an engine is the cylinder compression.  It can indicate a problem that may not yet be noticeable under normal operation.  To perform this test the spark plugs are removed and a pressure gauge is hooked to each cylinder, one at a time.  The engine is turned over and the max pressure is marked.  While checking this, inspect the side of the block for cracks.  Do the same for the manifolds.

LAKE TEST

  • Cruise Control- does your boat have cruise control? does it stay at a constant speed? Gps Test for accuracy
  • Heater- some boats have heaters, does it work properly without leaks?
  • Shower- some boats have shower hoses. does it work? is it a hot shower?
  • Ballast System- do the tanks fill and empty? no leaks? is the ballast hard or soft?
  • Speedo- does the speedo work properly?
  • Steering Gear- make sure steering is soft. If its really hard to turn, you could need a new cable
  • Oil level – Check the oil once again to be sure it is in the same condition and does not show evidence of water contamination

TRAILER

  • Bearings- is the trailer road ready? greased bearings?  Are they tightened to spec?
  • Lights- do all the lights work on the trailer? Is the light hook up in good shape?
  • Tires- how old are the tires? cracks? tread?
  • Spare- does the trailer have one?  condition?
  • Winch- is the winch in good shape? Is the strap intact and strong?

So now that you have finished checking every part of the boat, what did you find? Is that really cheap deal still worth the money, or are you going to have to invest more money into the boat. While not an all inclusive list, each one of these bullet points can require a repair and money out of your pocket. Are the fixes something that Mr. Fix it can do or are you going to have to take it in to get serviced?  Is this boat going to run right out on the water, give you peace of mind, or make awesome memories? Will it break down constantly, will have to keep fixing things on it? Whether from an individual or a dealer if you follow our rigorous checklist and get down and dirty, you will be able to see what is a great deal and what is just not worth your money.  If this sounds exhausting to you you can leave it to the experts.  We specialize in pre-owned boats and would love the opportunity to find the right fit for you and your family.
