Look up and experience the life you are missing!

Story by: Enrique Martinez
Does technology make the world better or worse? This is a simple question that I have been thinking about for the past few weeks. Sure, it’s nice to have a smart phone that can connect you to your social media sites, send emails, take photos and post them on the internet, and put you in contact with anyone by dialing a number.  That being said, none of my best memories include a cellular device. Most of our memories are of us doing something fun, exciting, interesting or new. While we create these memories, we have unplugged from technology and opened our eyes to the world, our friends, our family and our lives, instead of constantly having our heads down looking at the screens on our phones.
Mail Online recently published an article that claims each person, on average, spends about 2 hours a day looking down at their cellphone! They even took it a little further and claimed that those 2 hours are a third more than the time spend interacting with our significant others! I have talked to friends and their families about what they think of technology. Everyone seems to be happy that you can have everything at your fingertips, but yet often feel lost without their phones. How can we break this feeling? How can we get away?
I am writing this post today, because I tend to be on my phone a lot during the week. Sometimes it is because of work, but more often than not, I am on social networks that were created to digitally share memories with other people. I see it as your own different online life. How can we unplug? How can we forget about our phones and just enjoy our families and friends, and communicate without interruption. Quality family time is really hard to come by these days, but I will guarantee you that no matter how addicted you or your kids might be to technology, going to the lake with your family can provide that much needed quality time together.

Meet My Dad, Enrique Sr.

Meet My Dad, Enrique Sr.

I was blessed to be born into a wonderful family. I am the youngest of three, and the only boy. I moved to a boarding school in Mississippi in 8th grade, leaving my family in California at a very young age. While it is hard to be far sometimes, my parents have always been extremely supportive of me, even if they didn’t want to be deep down. Now that I live in Memphis, and my middle sister is in New York, we cherish any time when our whole family is together, and this story is no exception.

My mom and older sisters Ana Paula and Fernanda

My mom and older sisters Ana Paula and Fernanda

My parents are the type of parents that always want to have memories with the family, so it’s simple, if we are together we are not on our phones. My middle sister has always been the keeper of this rule and has been known to take phones away if you pull them out during “Family Time.” For Father’s day a few years ago, we decided to go to our local lake in California and go fishing for the day.
I quickly found out that my two very smart and very beautiful sisters had no idea how to fish. The only time they had fished before was in a stocked lake full of trout where you could probably stick your hand in and grab a fish. After laughing to myself for a few minutes watching my sisters trying to figure how to get a hook on the line and bait the hook, I decided to be a good brother and teach them how to do it. This was my biggest mistake. If you do something once, be prepared to do it every time after that. I was getting asked to put hooks on and baits on hooks the rest of the day because the hooks were “sharp” and the bait “smelled gross.” I still get a kick out of it looking back on it.

Where are all the fish we caught?

We only caught one fish that day, but that didn’t bother anyone because we had such a great time together.
The great thing about a boat is that you are constantly involved with everyone else on the boat. No matter how stressful your week has been, everything seems to slow down once you get on the boat. I call this sensation being “unplugged” from the world. I challenge you to look up the closest lakes near you, we even have a post so you can find one in our area here. Check if there are any places that you can rent a boat for the day and discover boating with your family! It’s an incredible experience that will leave you wanting more. And remember that no matter what you like to do on the water – fishing, wake boarding, or just cruising – Memphis Boat Center has the right pontoon boat, bow rider, or ski boat just for you and your family!
Go ahead, make great memories with your kids on the water. Find your getaway and get Unplugged!

Our favorite way to make memories is to take out our boats on the lake and relax out on the water. Some people like to look on Craigslist for a super steal on a boat, but are those boats worth the money? People have shared with us some of their horror stories about buying used boats through the Internet. We had a really nice guy contact us about a boat that he had recently purchased. He told us that the boat looked super clean on the outside and that he was just super excited because he couldn’t believe the price he had paid for it. Well sure enough the seller hadn’t mentioned that the boat had previously sunk and the tower had been ripped off. When we saw the boat we immediately noticed that the boat looked like it was salvaged and patched up. At Memphis Boat Center, we will NEVER let our customers go through something like that! Some things to consider when buying a pre-owned boat.

Are you thinking about buying a pre-owned boat? Are you worried your going to be lied to and sold a boat that doesn’t work? How do you know if the boat will run properly? How do you know your investment will not go to waste?

These are all questions many people ask themselves when buying a pre-owned boat. Sometimes, the cheapest deal is not the best deal. Here at Memphis Boat Center we go through a rigorous inspection process to be sure we are offering quality at a good value.  That being said, Today is your lucky day!

jeremy

In this weeks blog, we will share with you the things to look for in a used boat to make sure that your investment is worth every penny!

Jerms

We break our inspections into Six different categories; Exterior/Interior, Powertrain, Instrumentation, Compression Test, Trailer, and finally the Lake Test. Lets define each category for you and tell you what to look for. Lets break it down!

EXTERIOR/INTERIOR

  • Hull Gelcoat- check for cracks, scratches, flaws or any damage
  • Deck Gelcoat- check for cracks, scratches, and damage
  • Decals- are the decals in good shape?
  • Hardware exterior- is the boat missing any bolts, screws, rivets, etc.
  • Windshield- are there any cracks, missing parts, etc.
  • Platform- is the platform in good shape, will you have to replace it, or re-cover it.
  • Underwater gear- is the underwater gear in good shape? Is the prop shaft straight?  Prop true? Any sign of impact?
  • Carpet- Is the carpet clean, missing snaps, mildewed, or nasty?
  • Upholstery- any cuts or holes, cracks, rotten wood, failed stitching, etc
  • Bimini- any cuts or holes, broken pieces, missing parts, cover, etc

POWERTRAIN

  • Engine Model- is the boat properly powered for its size?
  • Belts/Hoses- are they tight? dry-rotted? in good shape?
  • Oil Level- is the oil level good? is it clean? Any leaks? Oil condition can be a good indication of how a boat has been maintained.
  • Alternator- check the volt gauge, is the system charging properly?
  • Starter – does the starter work properly every time?
  • Run at idle. make sure idle is a good constant RPM.  Do you hear any abnormal sounds in the engine?  All cylinders firing?

INSTRUMENTATION

  • Steering- does the steering work properly and with the proper resistance?
  • Throttle-does the throttle advance smoothly?
  • Fire Ext- required equipment.  Is it present and charged?
  • Fuel Gauge- does the fuel gauge work, mark the proper amount of fuel?
  • Temp Gauge- does the temp gauge work?
  • Volt Gauge- does the volt gauge display the proper voltage?
  • Blower- does the blower work?
  • Bilge Pump- does the bilge work? can you hear it running?
  • Nav Lights- do both the navigation and anchor lights work properly?
  • Stereo/Speakers- does the unit power up?  does the remote(s) work? do the speakers work? tower speakers? are the speakers blown?

COMPRESSION TEST

  • A good indicator of the health of an engine is the cylinder compression.  It can indicate a problem that may not yet be noticeable under normal operation.  To perform this test the spark plugs are removed and a pressure gauge is hooked to each cylinder, one at a time.  The engine is turned over and the max pressure is marked.  While checking this, inspect the side of the block for cracks.  Do the same for the manifolds.

LAKE TEST

  • Cruise Control- does your boat have cruise control? does it stay at a constant speed? Gps Test for accuracy
  • Heater- some boats have heaters, does it work properly without leaks?
  • Shower- some boats have shower hoses. does it work? is it a hot shower?
  • Ballast System- do the tanks fill and empty? no leaks? is the ballast hard or soft?
  • Speedo- does the speedo work properly?
  • Steering Gear- make sure steering is soft. If its really hard to turn, you could need a new cable
  • Oil level – Check the oil once again to be sure it is in the same condition and does not show evidence of water contamination

TRAILER

  • Bearings- is the trailer road ready? greased bearings?  Are they tightened to spec?
  • Lights- do all the lights work on the trailer? Is the light hook up in good shape?
  • Tires- how old are the tires? cracks? tread?
  • Spare- does the trailer have one?  condition?
  • Winch- is the winch in good shape? Is the strap intact and strong?

So now that you have finished checking every part of the boat, what did you find? Is that really cheap deal still worth the money, or are you going to have to invest more money into the boat. While not an all inclusive list, each one of these bullet points can require a repair and money out of your pocket. Are the fixes something that Mr. Fix it can do or are you going to have to take it in to get serviced?  Is this boat going to run right out on the water, give you peace of mind, or make awesome memories? Will it break down constantly, will have to keep fixing things on it? Whether from an individual or a dealer if you follow our rigorous checklist and get down and dirty, you will be able to see what is a great deal and what is just not worth your money.  If this sounds exhausting to you you can leave it to the experts.  We specialize in pre-owned boats and would love the opportunity to find the right fit for you and your family.

The Best and Closest Lakes from Memphis to go boating!

Here at Memphis Boat Center we are often asked, “where is a good place to go boating around here?”  Today we will tell you our favorite locations to take out our boats, and we will tell you some of our pros and cons of each lake. Hopefully they can become your favorite locations to go boating as well. Don’t have a boat? No worries!!! Which ever lake you chose, we have the boat for it!

Pickwick Lake, TN.**: A local favorite, this lake has it all! Its the perfect lake if you want to socialize with other boaters and enjoy its landmarks. Pickwick is a great lake to take the family for the weekend and holidays. Its has great local restaurants and great marinas to store your boat. If your looking for smooth water to wakeboard, ski, or wakesurf, the Tombigbee waterway is the perfect spot to find smooth water at all times. This lake is a great lake to celebrate the fourth of July with your family while watching the firework show over the lake.

Horseshoe Lake, AR.*: Located only 40 minutes from downtown Memphis, this lake is a great lake for a day trip out on the water. Being so close to Memphis, this lake is one of our top choices to take our boats out to film. Due to the shape of the lake, it can have rough waters, and since its a shallow lake (10-25ft), the wake will sometimes not develop completely for surfing and wakeboarding.  Horseshoe is a great lake for those warm sunny days where you decide to go to the lake last minute, but still be able to have a full day on the water.

Tunica Cutoff, MS.*: This hidden gem provides calm buttery water everyday, no matter the time or weather. The Tunica Cutoff is an old river oxbow lake, that not many people know about. Wakeboarding and skiing are awesome here and you will always enjoy the smooth water since not many ski boats are out there. To get to the cutoff, you do have to drive through a trailer park, but for smooth waters, we see it as worth it.

Arkabutla Lake,MS.*: Another Lake that is really close to Memphis, Arkabutla delivers a great “day” get-away lake. This lake is a Corps lake so you do have to wear life jackets at all times. The boat ramps at this lake are awesome, but there is very few docks, making it hard to load and unload passengers. Arkabutla Can get crowded and rough from time to time but in general it is a great lake to go out to for the day.  It’s important that you know the lake as it can be shallow and there are stumps.

Sardis Lake, MS. *: Sardis is a great for for any water activity that you might be into. Sardis is a big lake and welcomes fisherman, waterskiers and wakeboarders year round. The lake was built for flood water control purposes, but not many of the average 5 million people that visit each year know this. the lake has and abundance of bass and is great for watersports and camping. Sardis is located about an hour away from Memphis, making it one of the hot spots for the summer.  Smooth water can be a little bit harder to find.

Pin Oak Lake, TN.**: Pin Oak is part of the Natchez Trace State Park, which provides ample campsites for an amazing weekend outdoor getaway. The lake is small, but it is protected from the wind creating an awesome lake for fishing and water sports. The campgrounds are quiet and private which allow you to really have a peaceful and enjoyable getaway.  This is another of our hidden gems that we love to visit.

Moon Lake, MS.*: Relatively close, Moon Lake provides some beautiful surroundings. you may experience some rough water at Moon Lake, but you will always be able to find smooth water around the bend.  The cypress trees provide a beautiful backdrop to a day on the water.

The Tennessee River, TN.**: Being able to put your boat in the river and ride is one of our favorite things to do. The benefits about riding on the river, is that you don’t get as much choppy water from other boats around you. For water sports the river is always great, if you find your self in choppy waters, then just go around a bend or two and you will find the smooth buttery water again.

Greers Ferry, AR.***: Greers Ferry is a beautiful lake located in Arkansas. It is a bit of a drive to get there, but it is a beautiful lake on which to spend the weekend. During the summer this lake turns into an awesome hot spot for boaters. The clear water and awesome scenery make for a great weekend out on the water.

Smith Lake, AL.***: Another beautiful lake with clear water, Smith lake provides another weekend get-away location that will always put a smile on your family’s face. This lake can get crowded from time to time, but it is still one of the premier lakes in the south. Great for surfing and wakeboarding, take your boat down there for a weekend of progression in your riding.

This summer, make sure to create memories with your family and go visit one of these lakes that are close to our location. A boat is not just an asset, a boat makes memories to last a lifetime with your family. 99.9% of the time that your out on a boat on a nice summer day, your smiling….if you are not, you should be.

Bring 16 of your closest friends or family with you on this roomy boat that you will call your home this summer. 1. 2014 Malibu 23 LSV. It is no shock that our favorite boat is hands down the 23 LSV. This boat has been the best selling boat in its class, so when we heard that Malibu was going to complete re-design its flag ship boat we could only imagine what Malibu had hidden up their sleeve.  We thought to ourselves that it was going to be hard to make the best boat in the industry even better, but Malibu hit a grand slam with this beauty. this boat features a brand new innovative hull design that will boost your wakeboarding and wakesurfing experience to levels never thought possible. The 23 LSV delivers the perfect wake from the moment it first hits the water and is the boat of choice for Red Bulls number one wakeskater, Brian Grubb.

This year, more that thirty waterski and wakeboard enthusiasts showed up bright and early, on a cold new years day, ready to hit the water for their first ride of the year. The event raised approximately $5200 to be used for Garretts dream trip to Orlando Florida.

We would like to thank the Collieville Ski Club, The Dream Factory of Memphis and the rest of the sponsors for letting us be a part of such an amazing event.

The tow boat of choice for this event was the beautiful Axis T22. The boat performed incredibly and handled even better. Come by the Memphis Boat Center to see this boat in person or check out our website at memphisboatcenter.com
