2016 Collegiate Wakeboard Nationals

This past weekend, 16 teams descended on Gulf Shores, Alabama and made camp at the Flora-Bama Beach Club for the 2016 Collegiate Wakeboard Nationals. This diverse collection of teams has been training non stop since the end of Nationals last year, and they were prepared to throw down again this year. Most of the teams involved have already had a chance to ride at the competition site due to a Regional Qualifier earlier this year. The competition was fierce, the bag of tricks was deep, and after 4 days of absolute pandemonium a champion was crowned. The Florida Gators won the 2016 title, as well as the 2015, with Arizona State coming in 2nd and Michigan State rounding out the top 3.

While none of the MBC teams finished in the top 5, Mississippi State charged into the top 10 and claimed the 8th spot in the country. The Rebels, behind a small, resilient team, fell from their coveted 5th spot all the way to 12th. Mississippi State’s Dale Milican brought home a 2nd place finish in the wakeskate division, and the Bulldog’s also took the 3rd place spot in women’s A behind Carrie Lynn McCormick’s powerful performance. “I’m just really proud of how many people we go to show up to the competition, it was rough for a school week,” said Danny Flanigan, the team’s president. “We are lucky to have such devoted team members.” Below are the full results from the weekend just in case you missed the live stream on Alliance Wake!

  1. How long have you been at Memphis Boat Center?

I started working here January 1st, 2014 so almost 3 years.

  1. What is your favorite part about working with Memphis Boat Center?

It’s an opportunity to grow in an industry that you have a passion for.

  1. What is your favorite flavor of skittles?

Classic, the red pouch, it makes your saliva so thick you can bring it back up Big Daddy style.

  1. What is your favorite water related activity?

I started out as a wakeboarder but find myself surfing more now. As long as you are behind a boat it doesn’t matter.

  1. If you could be any marsupial, what would it be and why?

Sugar glider!! Those things can fly! They’re like flying squirrels.

  1. What is one interesting fact about you that most people don’t know?

I’m a pretty good cook, but I never actually cook, I was raised by a chef. #ChefMaca

  1. Whose better, Peyton Manning or Tom Brady?

Joe Montana, 49er’s for life! Trade Kaepernick, he is a distraction!

  1. What’s the farthest you have ever traveled from home?

I’ve been away from home since 8th grade, I’ve traveled a lot but I’m looking forward to Tokyo next year!

  1. What is your favorite boat at Memphis Boat Center?

The new 2017 Malibu 24 MXZ is the best boat I have ever been on, any company…any model.

  1. If you had 100 meters to race Hart Robinson on foot, do you think you could win?

Ha! Running? Yes 100 percent. But on a bike? No way, that guy is on another level!

  1. If you could live anywhere else besides the United States where would it be and why?

Croatia hands down! Have you seen the water and views there, it’s worth a google!

  1. Who is going to win the National Championship in College Football?

I think a 1 loss Alabama will win the Natty this year. I really dislike bama, but the defense is so strong. I’m rooting for Ole Miss to beat them this weekend and make it three in a row. Mississippi State lost to South Alabama; we have some work to do. Dak needs to do better this weekend and throw some TD’s or else my fantasy team strategy goes out the window! #DerkPerskert

  1. How long have you been at Memphis Boat Center?

I can remember picking up a boat from downtown Memphis with Cooper in 1990 or so. I was 8 or 9 years old and he sent me on a 24 foot cruiser from the Memphis Yacht Club to meet him at the boat ramp on Auction Street. I didn’t know where the reamp was exactly but it all ended well. I worked here on and off growing up and came into the business full time in 2003.

  1. What is your favorite part about working with Memphis Boat Center?

Helping people experience the wholesome family fun boating provides!

  1. What is your favorite flavor of skittles?

Bacon!

  1. What is your favorite water related activity?

Surfing and swimming.

  1. If you could be any marsupial, what would it be and why?

That’s a strange question…

  1. What is one interesting fact about you that most people don’t know?

Most people think I am more interesting than I actually am.

  1. Whose better, Peyton Manning or Tom Brady?

Peyton Manning.

  1. What’s the farthest you have ever travelled from home?

5,334 miles

  1. What is your favorite boat at Memphis Boat Center?

We sold them all. I am partial to the Axis A24

  1. If you had 100 meters to race Hart Robinson on foot, do you think you could win?

I think it would be a tie.

  1. If you could live anywhere else besides the United States where would it be and why?

Well 1.) if I didn’t have to live in the US I would like to think I was reaching a population that hadn’t heard the gospel. In that case, wherever, but I wouldn’t argue if God’s plan included a good climate and good food. 2.) I’ve heard New Zealand is nice and an active lifestyle is common.

  1. Who is going to win the National Championship in College Football?

I don’t know. Ask me after it has happened.
